1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo
This car
has a great story behind it. It was bought for next to nothing at the local
Goodwill car lot. The car’s primary focus was to keep a small budget and the
Project Goodwill name stuck. You can read the story of Project Goodwill at http://www.joebucci.com/Goodwill1.html
. The car
ran some impressive times on a budget. Starting with a base line pass of 15.181
@ 90.89, it broke into the 11s with a total investment of $1800.00 including the
car. It then broke into the 10s for $5500.00 invested. It did this without the
usual growing pains that most modified car run into. It just went faster every
trip to the track. Fast enough that the car currently holds the record for E.T.
and MPH on the factory stock 14b turbocharger with a 10.84 @ 126 mph without the
use of nitrous oxide. It also holds the record on the 14b with a 60 shot of
nitrous at 10.61 @ 131.79. The next
step was to try the next logical upgrade to the turbocharger and bolt on a 16g.
The car proceeded to destroy any 16g records by running 10.51 @ 133 without
nitrous oxide on the “small” 16g. It also ran 10.38 @ 136 on the “small”
16g and a 30 shot of nitrous. Following those passes, an EVO 3 GT 16g was bolted on
and the nitrous times dropped to 10.1 @ 140 with a 60 shot of nitrous oxide. Getting
the car to run these kinds of times has required a much more serious approach
and a lot more money. Any “Budget” monikers have been dropped with the
addition of a forged race motor and custom built transmission. The car has been
built with NHRA Hot Rod and NDRA Pro 4 Cylinder rules in mind and safety has
been addressed to be track legal for the times the car has run. The car has now
run in the single digits and with the help of Mowery Racing it will
continue to be track legal and safe with the addition of a proper certified 25.5
roll cage as well as some other chassis work to lighten and strengthen the
unibody chassis. Forced Performance will be helping to make horsepower by
supplying their well known Green Model turbocharger with a newly designed
turbine wheel for even more power than the previous version. Hawver Racing has
also supplied their new race intake manifold made of durable cast aluminum and
designed to maximize flow to the 4G63 powerplant. These companies and their
parts will help propel the Laser to ridiculously fast times and plenty of wins
on the track. |
